When the Centers for Disease Control confirmed that local mosquitoes to a neighborhood of Miami were the source of Zika infections this summer, we all started to panic. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) wanted to educate residents that Zika can be transmitted through sex. Many are aware of the mosquito-borne disease, but might not realize that it can be transmitted sexually, as well. This Zika awareness ad campaign included a mix of static billboards and mobile billboards, each touting a condom with the words “Prevents Zika Transmission.”
The PreventZika.com website in which the out-of-home creative directs us to helps further explain the Zika virus in both English and Spanish, as well as promotes AHF’s free condom locator and STD testing services.
One of the biggest concerns with the Zika virus is that it has been linked to serious birth defects, including microcephaly. Of those infected with Zika, about 4 in 5 are asymptomatic. A blood test can confirm the presence of the Zika virus. Investing in proper medical equipment for pregnant women during an outbreak such as this is highly important. Using a portable ultrasound can help them keep track of their baby’s development and see how they are doing throughout. Doctors can look at this to see how they can make this type of equipment available to their patients and what it could mean for pregnancy issues. Those who are keen to prevent the spread of viruses of any kind into their own homes may well want to stock up on things like hand sanitizer to help protect themselves and their families from serious illnesses.
Michael Weinstein, president of AHF, was quoted in Business Wire as saying: “Sexual transmission of the Zika virus remains a significant mode of transmission of this devastating virus. Therefore, any and all methods of preventing the possible transmission of the Zika virus should be promoted and shared with the public as part of a wider public health education and prevention strategy.”
The attention-grabbing, larger-than-life condoms made people point and laugh, take out their cameras and pose in front of the outdoor advertisements; and the ad campaign also created some controversy. But the overall results were that people took notice of the message and started talking about other ways Zika is transmitted. It is vital that people start becoming more comfortable with having STD tests. There are many cases of various different STD’s and the Zika virus across America and the only way to limit the spread is testing.
Our mobile billboards drove this public health announcement into high traffic areas, alerting residents that condoms can help reduce the rate of Zika transmission.
Please note, we are not affiliated with AHF. We were proud to activate this campaign for them in conjunction with Billups Worldwide. We can do the same for you.
